Every year Christchurch, New Zealand plays host to the Ellerslie International Flower Show. Working with WETA Workshop, writer, designer and sculptor Johnny Fraser-Allen has created an installation guaranteed to make grownups and kids want to attend a flower show. (see excerpts and images of the book in The Gloaming Image Gallery)
Frasier-Allen has been sculpting and shooting images for his book series, “The Gloaming“, the first of which is soon to be released, for years now. Rather than drawing this amazing world, Frasier has sculpted each creation in a variety of sizes from very small to larger than life. A self-taught, veteran sculptor Frasier-Allen has painstakingly sculpted each one himself and photographed each in their own world.
Fraser-Allen says, ” My goal is to make the fantastical more realistic for kids, as well as inspire adults to imagine the stories that surround them. They are so much part of my own life I could write a small thesis on each one of them”. Not only do they make for beautiful 2-Dimensional images, in person, many of them stand up to “up close” viewing.

The installation in the Ellerslie International Flower Showwas a highlight, one that had many questioning how soon they will be able to get their hands on Fraser-Allen’s book series. As a live installation, “The Gloaming” was amazing, as a book series the worlds and characters will no doubt live on for a long time.
