It seems that the cruise industry is not content with just getting you out on the open water and keeping you entertained. These days bigger is better and the industry seems bent on not only getting you out to sea but being certain you have nothing to miss on land. Norwegian Cruise Lines is so certain that they can accommodate this, their newest ship, “Joy” will be the largest in the world and will include attraction previously unheard of at sea.
Not content with the usual fodder of Casinos, imitation rock walls and topless decks, Norwegian is taking the cruise attraction area and turning it on its head. How will they keep their riders entertained?
Let’s check the list…
- Hovering Bumper cars? Check!
- Virtual Reality rides and attractions? Check!
- Giant Water Slides (that hang over the edge of the boat)? Check!
- A 2 story race track? Wait … what?
Yes, you read that right. Norwegian Cruise Lines will add a 2 story go-cart style race track to the luxury liner. So, if you were going to ask, “How big is this ship?”, it is THAT big. Add to that the usual areas such as huge commons areas, restaurants, workout facilities and rooms that rival the visual appeal and technological advancements of most hotel room s and you may be starting to get an idea of the immense scale of this new ship.
If the concept art is to be believed, the new ship will look like one of the most modern, swanky hotels in any major metropolis let alone at sea. With a date for opening some time in 2017 in China, this ship promises to be the future of cruising. Only time will tell if Bigger is in fact Better, but we are seeing the future and with ships this size it is only a matter of time before Ocean Liner Cities begin popping up. For better or worse, we applaud Norwegian for attempting such a daring feat and we will just have to see what comes of it in the future (and not watch Titanic before we board).
As always, when more news or art come out from the Joy, we will keep you updated.
